Walk down the feed aisle and the choices can feel overwhelming. Here is how we think about it. Protein is the headline number. Most laying hens do well on a 16% protein layer ration. Push to 18% for high-production breeds or during a heavy molt. Calcium builds the shell. A good layer feed already includes it, but offering free-choice oyster shell on the side lets each bird top up as she needs. Crumble versus pellet is mostly about waste and preference — crumble is easier for younger birds, pellets waste less. Either way, keep it fresh and keep it dry.
